It was so nice to see the smile on their faces. I knew instantly they had enjoyed their train journey. Their latest experience was aboard B.C. Rail's new Whistler Northwind travelling between North Vancouver and Prince George over a three-day period. And a great experience it was. The magical service, the elegance in motion and the exceptional cuisine, as promised by the brochure, did not disappoint. Each was delivered in style with a smile on the face of every staff person aboard. In a country rich with railway lore, and in a region of Canada well known for spectacular scenery, the Whistler Northwind will quickly become a popular excursion. B.C. Rail's line was originally surveyed in 1912 and construction soon began for the Pacific Great Eastern Railway Company. It wasn't until 1952 that the line to Prince George was completed having been slowed due to political interference, WW1, the Great Depression, and then WW2. Passenger service started that year and has continued without disruption since then. Budd Cars were introduced in 1956 and resulted in the gradual disappearance of conventional trains but with increased profits. In 1972 the provincial government changed the rail name to British Columbia Railway to better represent the territory it served. Today the Whistler Northwind has been conceived as a land cruise on rails and features 180-degree views from 3 single level dome cars and several other cars dating back to the glory days of rail travel in the 50's. Each of the older cars has been refurbished to reflect their original charm while accommodating modern traveller expectations.
