George's Journal: a Collection of Articles UNFORGETABLE NEWFOUNDLAND All Canadians know of it. Few Canadians have visited it. And those who haven't have missed a great Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador. There you will find so much history and scenery that I highly recommend you delay no longer and join us on August 17th to explore this fascinating "rock". Over a 13-day period we shall visit the scenic highlights and enjoy the playful Newfie humour as we travel. We start with exploring St. John's, one of North America's oldest communities. Here you will visit the oldest Anglican parish in North America dating back to 1699 and historic Signal Hill where Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic wireless message. We'll also enjoy a boat cruise to Bird Island Sanctuary. Then we begin our exploration of the province including Conception Bay to see the town where Amelia Earhart took off on her famous flight, and journey to the "Heart's" -Heart's Delight, Heart's Desire and Heart's Content. Relax while exploring the quiet lanes of picturesque Trinity. Gander is well known as a refuelling stop for trans-Atlantic flights many years ago and more recently as having hosted thousands of people grounded after the 9-11 incident. Coastal fishing villages such as Twillingate are next where we find the true Newfoundland lifestyle and culture. Enjoy meeting a fishing family and try to spot whales and icebergs. Next we take in the spectacular scenery of the Kittiwake Coast and learn about mussel farming before we visit Corner Brook, the second largest city on the island. We travel up the Viking Trail with many stops along the way to St. Anthony for a two night stop. Here we visit L'Anse Meadows where it is believed Leif the Lucky settled in the year 1000 AD. We also cross over the Straits of Belle Isle to Labrador to visit a recently discovered Basque Whaling Station and learn the "11 modern techniques" used by those early whalers to survive in Labrador. Our journey finishes by driving south through Gros Morne National Park and a boat cruise to view deep fjords, vertical cliffs and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We finish with a home-cooked Farewell Dinner in Rocky Harbour before our flight home the next day. This exciting programme explores an often overlooked but dramatic part of our country. In the words of one of our favourite clients: "Every time I have been back I have been impressed that you never have to go out and find Newfoundland culture. It is there all around you. You don't have to look for it. It finds you. You can't help but be immersed completely and immediately into it." Newfoundland. We love it! If this is not for you, join us in Kelowna as we enjoy the Bard in the Vineyard performance of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. This package is available as a group departure on August 08th for two nights or as a self-drive package. Reservations are available through Bell Travel at 604-535-2587.
